A Pair of Antique French Plant Stands with Marble Tops - Belle Epoque

In the antique furniture glossary, the term Indoor Plant Stands, usually refers to an elongated narrow and relatively high table with a custom top on which something will sit. While originally planned to be used indoors and carry a flowerpot with fern or a vase with flowers, the Plant Stand is commonly used at antique and art galleries, as well as in collectors' drawing rooms, to display small collectible and precious items at human eye level.
This beautiful pair of antique stands is comprised of two breathtaking elegant French Plant Stands of the period often referred to as the Belle Epoque, with gilt brass mountings and tops made of marble. They were both made circa 1880 in French, probably by the same manufacturer, and represent a mature bon ton luxurious design and excellent craftsmanship.

Tall Antique French Plant Stand - Articulated Mahogany Frame with Octagon Marble Top

The tall stand (its height is 40"), has a graceful articulated fluted column legs which end with high saber feet. The bottom tier is a styled diamond shape plate, made of quality mahogany wood with a decorative turned spindle knob in the middle of the plate.
The top tier of the tall Plant Stand is made of cream and honey marble surrounded by a pierced gilt brass gallery in the shape of an octagon (the width of the marble top is 12"). The marble plate sits on an octagon wooden frame with beautiful brass ornaments.

Note that no true Ormolu was produced in France after around 1830 because legislation had outlawed the use of mercury - from the 19th century the term Ormolu has been popularized to refer to gilt metal usually brass or imitation gold.

Categorizing Antique Furniture Indoor Stands
High end indoors Plant Stands are made of four legs of good quality wood, a two tier shaft frame, and have a solid custom marble top which holds the specific plant pot. Typical sizes of plant stands are: height from 30" to 40" and width or diameter of top from 8" to 17".

Stands with height which is less than 30'' fall to the category of portable Candle Stands which were used before the advent of electric lights to hold candles and oil lamps for lightning.

Other specific types of antique furniture which can be categorized as general purpose indoors stand are End Tables Stands and Side Tables Stands AKA Gueridons which are quite similar to Plant Stands in their structure but lower in height and wider in the top's width or diameter.

Stands higher than 40" usually fall to the category of pedestals and may have an unstable column nature - not something that you would want to put items on top of.

This classical well-shaped short Plant Stand (its height is 32") has an elegant straight square profile column legs which end with high slim cabriole feet. The bottom tier is a styled diamond shape plate made of quality wood which can be used for holding a second smaller plant pot or an art object. The top tier is rounded plate of pink gray marble surrounded by a round pierced gilt brass gallery (the diameter of the marble top is 17") which sits on a rounded wooden frame.
Beautiful gilt brass ornament in the classical style of La Belle Epoch fashion on the Plant Stand's top.
Note the similarity between the elongated beads ormolu style decorative mounts on the columns and legs of both stands - real French always go in couples :-).
