Tuvia Beeri - Aquatint Etching - Cosmos with Nebula

This wonderful aquatint etching by Tuvia Beeri is a magnificent example of the depths reached by the artist in his search. I feel that the composition is the result of a methodological thought process and nothing is left to chance. It expresses original conclusions which the artist drew from a careful and patient inspection of the inner-self or the outer world or both.
I am fascinated by the rather complex fabric which combines basic two-dimensional geometrical shapes such as squares, triangles, circles and semi-circles, with more amorphous forms, whose outlines become vague in certain regions, where they cross and invade each other's borderlines. In addition, the two-dimensional structures are laid one on top of the other in a way that builds up, by means of hidings, shadings and lines of perspective, in-depth three dimensional structures - the distribution of the colors between the various surfaces of the work enhances and emphasizes its geometrical aspects.

Until recently I was certain that these associations are just my own private associations and that they do not relate to the way the artist perceives his own work. However, this has changed after I came across a very interesting article written by Prof. Avraham Ronen on Beeri's art. I was glad to discover that I am not alone in the cosmos of associations. Let me cite (in a free translation from Hebrew) what Prof Ronen wrote about Tuvia Beeri's prints from the mid and late 60s under the title Aquatints - The Mature Style:
... the circles as well as the other geometrical shapes are seen to be engulfed by amorphous, soft margin nebula like colored areas, and they create a primeval surrounding that can be interpreted as a cosmic space, in which mysterious celestial bodies are floating. The terminology which Beeri itself used in order to describe these works, which connect them to stories about the creation, to classical myths about space, to astronomical phenomena and flights to outer space, do open the way for such an iconographical interpretation.

טוביה בארי הוא מחלוצי אמנות התחריט בארץ. בראשית שנות השישים נסע לפאריס כדי ללמוד את טכניקת הדפס האקווטינט, עם דגש על עבודה בצבע, אצל המייסטר ג'וני פרידלנדר Johnny Friedlaender. כשחזר לארץ החל לפתח סגנון ושפה אמנותית יחודיים לו.
התחריט שלפנינו הוא דוגמה נהדרת לעומקים שאליהם הגיע בארי בחיפושיו. הקומפוזיציה היא תולדה של חשיבה יסודית - אף פרט כאן אינו אקראי. זהו ביטוי של מסקנות האמן שנולדו מתוך התבוננות, חיצונית ופנימית, ארוכה וסבלנית. יש כאן מארג מורכב מאוד בפרטיו המשלב בין צורות גיאומטריות דו-ממדיות בסיסיות, כגון ריבועים, משולשים, עיגולים וחצאי עיגולים, לצורות אחרות יותר אמורפיות, שמתאריהן נוטים באיזורים מסוימים להיטשטש, ולחצות זה את גבולותיו של זה. בנוסף, התבניות הדו ממדיות מונחות זו על גבי זו, באופן שיוצר מבני עומק באמצעות הסתרות, הצללות וקווי פרספקטיבה. התפלגות הצבע בין משטחי הציור מעצימה ומחזקת את האפקטים הצורניים-גיאומטריים הללו.
