The views of real Safed (Tsefat) were just the starting point for Mordechai Levanon's (1901-1968) inner journey which carried him through the paths and alleys of his inspired and flaming imagination.
It is instructing to look for the signs of the real views which are still present in this fantastic symphony of colors. They look as if the artist has left them there deliberately, to serve as sign posts and links between his personal emotions and state of mind, and the outer world which includes the real physical presence of the town and the mountains, as well as us, the viewers of this painting. He wishes us to see how he is rearranging the subjects and the priorities. How color, light and their delicate balances are taking over the lines, figures and contours. Perhaps he is inviting us to do it ourselves.

אור וצבע. ארבעה צבעים שולטים בנוף צפת של מרדכי לבנון הנפרש לעיננו: צהוב, כחול, אדום-חום ולבן. במקומות מסוימים הם מונחים במשטחים מובדלים לעצמם, נקיים מצבעים אחרים, ובמקומות אחרים הם נמזגים וניתכים האחד בגבולות השני. הצורות וקווי המתאר של הנוף המקורי אינם מתבטלים לגמרי, אבל הם כאילו נסוגים לאחור בלחץ הצבעוניות והקומפוזיציה של הצבע.
ההגיון הפנימי של שילובי הצבעים ואיזוניהם הוא העיקרון המכריע בסידור ובארגון. לכן ניצב לו במרכז הקומפוזיציה עץ דקל, שגזעו מודגש בצבע חום אדמה כהה ובולט, ונוף צמרתו עשוי במשלב צבעים בלתי אפשרי של כחול ואדום בהיר עם גווני ירוק וצהוב שאולי קיימים בדקל אמיתי. השמיים ופני הקרקע משיחים זה עם זה במרקמי צבע רוויי לחות ועננות מיים. עומק הפרספקטיבה נבנה מהתכנסותם של קווי מגוז שבהם קווי כחול ומשטחי צהוב מוליכים את העין אל תוך ההר ובמעלה השמיים. הצבעים נוזלים ורוטטים, חיים ומתפתלים, והעיר איתם: רועשת, רותחת ומאיימת לפרוץ ולגלוש מעבר לקווי המתאר שלה. והאנשים? איפה האנשים? שני כחולים קטנים במרכז עם גבם אלינו, וברנש אחד בצד ימין שפניו אלינו, והוא נח בכסא בצל ביתו. כל כך שקועים במילוי חובותיהם היום-יומיות בקומפוזיציה הגדולה עד שנדמה שכלל אינם מודעים לסערת הצבע הגדולה המתחוללת מסביבם.

מרדכי לבנון לא היה רק אמן דגול, אלא בראש ובראשונה אדם בעל שאר רוח, לב חם ונפש פיוטית מעודנת שהשרה על אלה שבאו במחיצתו אוירה בשומה וחמה שזורה בהומור ואמרות כנף שלעיתים הובנו רק במאוחר. האקוורל הצבעוני שלפנינו, הזורח באור אביב מופלא - נוף צפת 1952 - פרץ בקול תרועה מתוך השירה שבנפשו.
