Edvard Munch - Collectible Art Books and Artist's Monographs

Actually the use of the label "expressionist" disregards a large part of his work. Munch has always been unknown in France, to the point that to date no French monograph has been written about him. Yet his work is profoundly original. When he began his artistic career, at the end of the nineteenth century, his association with Parisian artistic circles brought him under the impressionists and neo-impressionist influence, but only for a very brief time.

אדוארד מונק Edvard Munch , מגדולי האמנים הנורווגים, עבר ילדות קשה במיוחד. אמו, ואחותו מתו עליו בגיל צעיר ואביו שהיה רופא, כירורג צבאי בעל נטיות דתיות קיצוניות, נהג בו בתוקפנות יוצאת דופן אפילו בהשוואה לסטנדרטים הקשוחים של ארצות צפון אירופה בסוף המאה ה- 19 כפי שתאר מונק: "אבי היה בעל מזג עצבני ונגוע באובסיסביות דתית - ממנו ירשתי את זרע הטירוף. מלאכי הפחד, הצער והמוות הקיפו אותי מיום שנולדתי". מונק הצעיר מצא מפלט בציור ששימש ביטוי ומוצא לחרדות, לסבל ולקדרות שאפפו את תחילת חייו, והחליט להיות צייר למורת רוחו של אביו. לאחר הצלחה מסוימת בסצנת האמנות של אוסלו, עבר לפריז ומשם לברלין והחל לגבש את סגנון הציור האישי המיוחד שלו הנובע ממעמקים.

שנה לאחר שצייר את הציור שמעל, בגיל 45, הגיע מצבו הנפשי של מונק לשפל המדרגה, לכאורה בשל אהבה נכזבת, אבל הרבה יותר סביר שהיה זה פועל יוצא של שנים רבות של "חיים על הקצה" מלוות בשתייה מוגזמת, קטטות, אלימות ותשתית נפשית שבירה. מונק, מודאג בשל התקפים חוזרים ונשנים של שיתוק והירדמויות, אישפז עצמו בקליניקה של ד"ר דניאל יעקובסן בקופנהגן. הטיפולים שנמשכו כשמונה חודשים וכללו אמבטיות, שיחות ואף הזרמה של חשמל בוולטז' נמוך למוחו של האמן, הצליחו, ומונק התאושש, חזר לצייר, ונגמל במידה מסוימת מאלכוהול ועישון.

בציור הקריקטורסטי שמונק הקדיש לד"ר יעקובסן נראה מונק יושב, די נינוח, על כסא הטיפולים - ידיו קשורות ? - האחות המחשמלת מתעסקת בחוטי החשמל והרופא מנגב בעדינות את הזיעה ממצחו של הפציינט. ההקדשה של מונק כוללת את הטקסט הבא (מתורגם לאנגלית):

"Professor Jacobson passing electricity through the famous painter Edvard Munch, changing his crazy brain with the positive power of masculinity and the negative power of femininity."

מונק האריך ימים ונפטר בשלווה יחסית בנורווגיה בגיל 81.

Munch personality asserted itself in masterful canvases in which his tormented, disturbed mind, preyed upon by agonizing conflicts, contributed to the formation of aesthetics of anxiety which was at first and superficially viewed as simply as an expression of his "Norwegian pessimism". The fact is that we are dealing here with emotional characteristics peculiar to Munch unique individuality, and which were a source of both his creativity and his psychic problems.

Edvard Munch: meisterwerke aus der sammlung des Kunstlers im Munch-Museum in Oslo - Johan H. Langaard and Reidar Revold

This well illustrated art book is a comprehensive catalogue of Edvard Munch masterpieces from the collection of the artist in the Munch Museum in Oslo as well as a list of exhibitions and a bibliography of Munch. The book was written and edited by two Munch experts: Johan H. Langaard and Reidar Revold. Johan Langaard, the son of the Norwegian art collector Christian Langaard, was a renown art historian and art critic, served as the head of the Norwegian National Museum, led the collections of the city of Oslo and founded the Munch Museum in Oslo in 1963.

The second author, Reider Revold, gained a notorious reputation after being accused in the theft of 71 works of Edvard Munch in the 1960s. Revold, who was the first curator of the Munch Museum in Oslo, was responsible for moving Munch works to the museum new premises in Oslo in the early 60s. Suspicions about stolen works of Munch were awakened in 1967 when two works of the artist with stamps of the Munch Museum were brought for evaluation to Paul Hougen who was also a curator at the Munch Museum at that time. After a short investigation, Revold confessed in stealing a few tens of Munch paintings and in selling them to art dealers in Europe especially in Basel and Bern. Revold was sentenced to five years in prison and his wife was sentenced to eight months for her part in the affair. The police announced that more than 100 works of Munch are still missing and estimated the profits of the Revolds couple from these thefts in millions of Norwegian Krones.

בביוגרפיה על אדוארד מונק Edvard Munch: Behind The Scream שכתבה סו פרידו Sue Prideaux's מתואר מקרה מצמרר שמעיד מעט על האטמוספירה שמסביב חייו של מונק. ב-1902 בעקבות משבר רומנטי בין מונק לידידתו, יורשת עשירה בשם טולה לארסן Tulla Larsen הסתבך מונק באירוע ירי. יריה מאקדח, לא ברור של מי וגם לא מי ירה, פילחה את האצבע האמצעית בכף ידו השמאלית. ככה זה נראה ברנטגן:

רופא שהוזעק לדירתה של לארסן העביר את מונק לבית החולים, שם, בשל התנגדותו העזה לכלורופורם, נותח ללא חומרי הרדמה. מונק, שנשאר ער במשך זמן הניתוח להוצאת הקליע, הנציח את האירוע מאוחר יותר בציור שבו הוא מתואר, שוכב עירום על סדין הניתוחים מוצף בדם וידו השמאלית קפוצה. את הטראומה הזאת הוא צייר ביד ימין.

This book by Jean Selz is one of the first about Edvard Munch to appear. In it, the painter's life and work are analyzed in their aesthetic and psychological correlation.
