When I was a small kid, somewhere between 5 and
6, the bon ton of nostalgia was the
78
vinyl records . I still remember my mother discussing classical music with a
friend and saying a phrase like "Ah, yes, this I already had on a 78". "This"
most probably referred to a piece by Beethoven or Schubert, and didn't give me
any trouble, but the 78 was a real mystery.
Why 78 and not something else? And why was the
tone in which it was pronounced so sweet and melancholic?
