Osias Hofstatter - Drawings and Prints - The Joy of Life

The following quotation was taken from an introduction by Benjamin Tammuz to Osias Hofstatter exhibition which took place in Dugith art gallery in Tel-Aviv 1970.

As world events contrive to make the human condition ever more wretched, ludicrous and insurable, an ever greater number of people will seek refuge in illusion, in the din of unceasing activity and easy entertainment, that hold out a promise of oblivion to the realities of the existence. An encounter with Osias Hofstatter's wonderful art will grip even the most determined of escapes, and with terrible  force turn them back to face the deepest layers of man's innermost reality. For one who contemplates this art - there is no escape and no refuge.

Indeed anyone who is familiar with Hofstatter's biography will find it very difficult to look at his drawings and paintings independently of the dark, sombre cellars of human existence as reflected in Hofstatter's life story. But such an approach, although natural and understandable, shortchanges both the artist and the viewer. Hofstatter chose to continue his personal agenda and not to indulge in a world of suffering - the two works before us provide an excellent example of his choice.

... when I found the one my heart loves. I held him and would not let him go till I had brought him to my mother's house, to the room of the one who conceived me.

The Joy of Life by Osias Hofstatter Israeli painter Osias Hofstatter - Ink Drawings - The Joy of Life

Osias Hofstatter - Ink on Paper - Lebensfreude - The Joy of Life

Hey, what is going on here? Is this the famous Hofstatter's "...sombre cellars of human experience, laden with horror and a sensuality born of despair" ? or is it just a plain solid scene of Joy of Life :-).
