Ben Nicholson: drawings, paintings and reliefs, 1911-1968 - Introduction by John Russell

***

In March 1934 Ben Nicholson exhibited for the first time his all-white geometric reliefs. In these carved and painted structures, Nicholson had reached the radical extreme of the modernist trend towards a purified geometric form. These white reliefs were the culmination of series of experiments - the first reliefs were irregularly formed and colored and had a distinctively "hand-made" quality. Then Nicholson stripped the reliefs of color and reduced their forms to bare geometric essentials. The resulting white reliefs represent a point of purification which remains a challenging standard today.

Ben Nicholson : drawings, paintings and reliefs, 1911-1968 / Introduction by John Russell -

I am looking at this crisp, clean and sharp relief - it appears simplistic and minimal, yet effective in highlighting the shapes, and focusing on the shadows and the lines - a real mastermind!

The wonderful collectible monograph edited by John Russell provides both a full biography of Nicholson and a stimulating discussion of the works produced in the years 1911-1968. Russell clearly explains why Nicholson is considered as the leader of the English avant-garde movement and describes his intense devotion to geometric abstraction. A large portion of the 298 illustrations included in the book are shown here for the first time. The book also contains citations from Nicholson's own writing about his work that has not previously been published. John Russell leads a deep approach and innovative insight which paves the way for other researchers of the work of this outstanding artist.
