David Hockney by David Hockney

Born in 1937, David Hockney is one of the most popular and successful of living artists and yet, Hockney has always remained a totally serious artist. His work shows an extraordinary capacity for renewal, invention and unexpected new departures.

David Hockney by David Hockney - Artist Monograph

In this witty, candid and revealing monograph of himself (authored by Nikos Stangos in the tradition of Cellini's Autobiography), Hockney tells of his early years in Bradford, where he was born and grew up, and first went to art school; his years at the Royal College of Art, during which he had his breakthrough and first came to public attention; his sojourn in California, which inspired his best-known paintings, drawings and prints; and his time in Paris.

What makes this book so fascinating is not only that the entire text is by Hockney himself - so that his life-story is given maximum documentation - but also that it reproduces almost all his early paintings and graphic work, as well as many of his drawings. In this respect, the book amounts to an oeuvre catalogue, although its structure follows the narrative of Hockney's text and is relatively informal. The story, presented in more or less chronological form, is informative and humorous, full of descriptions of his work, anecdotes about himself, other artists and friends, his thoughts about art, and his ambiguous relationship with abstract and other current art styles.

David Hockney - 1955

Informative and entertaining, illustrated with a wealth of reproductions from his works, this is the story of an artist who is ceaselessly striving to improve his art, and to learn to interpret the world around him through his artistry and imagination.

David Hockney - The Chair

72 Drawings by David Hockney

This excellent collection of drawings, explicitly chosen by David Hockney, includes many of the artist's intimate friends and colleagues such as Ossie Clark, Celia Birtwell and Peter Schlesinger (who took the photograph on the jacket cover). But more than documenting the life of David Hockney in California, this soft cover album has an important impact on the international gay community and especially on the work and expectations of gay artists themselves.

72 Drawings by David Hockney

A quote from the biography of the American contemporary painter Patrick Angus (1953 - 1992):

In 1974, a scholarship to the Santa Barbara Art Institute led him to discover the book 72 Drawings by David Hockney (1971). Here he found an artist who celebrated his sexual persona in his work and who glamorized the "good" gay life in Los Angeles, only 100 miles away.

The life of Angus were not easy. His subject matter was not accepted by the American commercial art market - the bourgeois gay establishment disapproved his depictions of the politically incorrect "bad" gay life, the demimonde of cruising, hustling, and loneliness. In the early 1990s, poor and unable to afford a doctor, Patrick Angus was diagnosed with AIDS.
