Aharon Giladi - Oil on Canvas - Mother and Child

Aharon Giladi, a well-known and appreciated Israeli artist, was, at the crucial time of his development, a member of Kibbutz Afikim. Kibbutz Afikim is located at a short distance from the southern part of the Sea of Galilee, and the landscapes of this extremely beautiful and unique area are reflected in a subtle but nevertheless unmistakable manner in Giladi's works.

A frequently recurring motif in his paintings and drawings is figures of women carrying small children or babies in their bosoms. Sometimes it's a group of several mothers and children and sometimes it only has one mother and one child. While the softly turning contours leave no room for a doubt about the feminine character of the larger figure, these same lines completely hide from the spectator the gender of the child. Presumably, this is not a coincidence, and the painter wants to tell us that this issue, the gender of the child, is of no importance.

Giladi combines, in this painting, the techniques of concrete realistic drawing with the techniques of abstract painting. The subject of the painting is made clear and explicit due to the dark colored contour that outlines the two figures and separates them from the background. But in parallel to this, we find here large, monochromatic abstract spreads of colors, which enable the painter to make general and generalizing statements about motherhood, childhood, mother and child relations, love and tenderness.

The face of the mother is just one big, uniformly radiating, white cream stain. The face of the child is a small, light brown spot that merges into the cloth of which the mother's dress is made of, and her hair. The white surfaces stand for the hug, for the unification of the two bodies into one entity through the hug. The lower spreads of white in the lower part of the mother's body, outline her pelvis, and remind us, that a short while ago, when the child was still a fetus in her womb, they were really one, inseparable, body.

As a matter of fact, letting our eye follow the white color surfaces in this painting, from bottom up, we get a very interesting message. The child, which started his life inside, and seemingly won his independent existence by escaping this center of gravity in the birth process, is caught again, in an upper orbit, if we borrow an image from astronomy. In this new orbit of relationships the situation is more symmetrical - mother and child are facing tete a tete, the four arms are closing a circle. This is an inspired philosophical statement which is solely expressed in a visual language of colors and lines.

Biography of the painter Aharon Giladi -
